What Is the Difference Between Strip Wax and Hot Wax?

Strip wax or hot (hard) wax? Learn how each one works, which areas each is best for, and how to choose the right wax for your skin and hair.

Strip wax and hot wax both remove hair from the root, but they work in different ways and suit different parts of the body. Knowing the difference helps you get smoother results with less pain.

What is strip wax?

Strip wax, also called soft wax, is spread in a thin layer over the skin. A cloth or paper strip is pressed on top and then pulled off quickly, taking the hair with it.

  • Covers large areas quickly
  • Great for fine and medium hair
  • Best for legs, arms, back and chest
  • Needs strips to remove

What is hot wax?

Hot wax, also called hard wax, is applied a little thicker and left to cool and harden on the skin. Once firm, it is pulled off by hand without any strip. It shrinks around the hair as it sets, so it grips the hair more than the skin.

  • No strips needed
  • Gentler on sensitive skin
  • Very good for short, coarse or stubborn hair
  • Best for underarms, bikini line, upper lip and face

Which one should you choose?

Many people use both: strip wax for the legs and arms, and hot wax for smaller, sensitive areas. If you only want one wax for home use:

  • Choose strip wax if you mainly wax large areas and want to finish quickly.
  • Choose hot wax if you have sensitive skin or mainly wax the underarms, bikini line or face.

What about Halawa wax?

Halawa wax is a traditional sugar-based wax made from simple ingredients like sugar, lemon and water. It is used at room temperature or slightly warm, applied with the fingers or an applicator, and removed without strips. Because it sticks to hair more than to skin, many people with sensitive skin prefer it. It is also easy to wash off with water.

Tips for either type of wax

  1. Test the temperature on your inner wrist before applying.
  2. Wax on clean, dry skin with hair about 5 mm long.
  3. Hold the skin taut and pull quickly against hair growth.
  4. Avoid waxing the same spot more than once.
  5. Soothe the skin afterwards with an after-wax oil or aloe vera.

The bottom line

Strip wax is fast and ideal for large areas, while hot wax is gentler and better for small, sensitive areas and coarse hair. Pick the one that suits your skin and the area you are waxing.
