Many people in Pakistan wax every few weeks, and one question comes up again and again: does waxing loosen skin over time? The short answer is no. Waxing done the right way does not make healthy skin saggy. Loose skin comes mainly from age, sun damage, weight changes and genetics, not from removing hair.
That said, poor technique can stress the skin. Below we explain what happens during a wax, when it can cause problems, and how to protect your skin.
What happens to your skin when you wax
When you wax, the wax grips the hair and pulls it out from the root. A very thin layer of dead skin cells also comes away, which is why skin feels so smooth afterwards. The deeper layers that keep skin firm, collagen and elastin, are not removed or damaged by a normal wax.
So a single wax, or regular waxing every 3 to 5 weeks, does not stretch the skin in a lasting way.
When waxing can stress the skin
- Not holding the skin taut. If the skin is loose while you pull, it gets dragged along with the wax. Over and over, this pulling is uncomfortable and can cause bruising, especially on the face and under the arms.
- Pulling slowly or upwards. A slow pull, or pulling away from the body instead of back along the skin, lifts the skin more than needed.
- Going over the same spot many times. Repeating wax on the same small area can cause redness and even lift the top layer of skin.
- Very hot wax. Wax that is too hot can burn delicate skin. Always test the temperature on your inner wrist first.
- Waxing thin or treated skin. Skin that is sunburnt, or skin treated with retinol creams or peels, is more fragile. Wait until it has recovered.
Is face waxing safe for skin firmness?
The skin on the face is thinner than on the legs or arms, so technique matters even more. Use a gentle wax made for sensitive areas, apply a thin layer, hold the skin firmly with your other hand and pull quickly in one smooth motion. A natural sugar-based wax such as Halawa wax grips the hair more than the skin, which makes it a kind choice for the face.
How to wax without stressing your skin
- Prepare the skin. Clean and dry the area. Do not apply oil or cream before waxing.
- Check hair length. About 5 mm (the length of a grain of rice) is ideal. Shorter hair needs more pulls.
- Hold the skin taut. Stretch the skin flat with your free hand just behind the area you are pulling.
- Pull fast and low. Pull quickly, against the direction of hair growth, and keep your hand close and parallel to the skin.
- Do one pass per area. Remove leftover hairs with tweezers instead of waxing the same spot again.
- Soothe afterwards. Apply a gentle after-wax oil or aloe vera to calm the skin.
What actually keeps skin firm
- Using sunscreen every day
- Drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet
- Not smoking
- Moisturising daily
- Getting enough sleep
The bottom line
Waxing does not loosen healthy skin. Problems come from rough technique, not from waxing itself. Hold your skin taut, pull quickly and look after your skin afterwards, and you can enjoy smooth skin for weeks without worrying about sagging.
